2012 Presidential Election Season in Iowa

Picture
Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN)
For forty years, Iowa has been the first presidential testing grounds, influencing campaign strategies across the field.

Between the Iowa Straw Poll in Ames on Aug. 13, the Iowa State Fair Aug. 11-21 and and the Iowa Caucuses Feb. 6, the GOP race intensifies.  While most serious contenders appear frequently in the first-in-the-nation state, focusing on population centers like Des Moines, local conservative talker WHO-AM becomes the center of the universe.  While polls taken at this stage are notoriously unreliable, literally every recent Republican president has made this pilgrimage.

Possibly most glaring is not who has appeared here, but the absence of Gov. Mitt Romney (R-MA) (who we feature here from his 2008 bid), Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) and former Speaker Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-GA).

As of Aug. 1, these are the candidates who have visited the radio station, in no particular order:
  • Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA)
  • Herman Cain (former Godfather's Pizza CEO)
  • Justice Roy Moore (former Chief Justice, Alabama State Supreme Court)
  • Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R-MN)
  • Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX)
  • Gov. George Pataki (R-NY)
